Reader Shared Horror Story
A woman named Melissa recently shared the following pictures with us, along with the accompanying story.
"While attempting to sleep overnight at a friends apartment in Aston towers located in Asheville Nc, within about a half hour I was bitten on both biceps, both backs of my hands, both calves, my stomach, around my entire ankles, left thigh, and eyebrow. While trying to maintain my composure & respect for my friends feelings as she continued to insist that while the apartments had bed bugs, she did not, I searched for any signs of the brutal creatures on the bed but saw nothing. I had however seen 2 adult bugs while there. Recognizing that their was clearly an infestation and suffering severe anxiety and confusion as to how my body was so severely brutalized yet I couldn’t see anything on me, the bed, etc. I showered, changed, and you can probably guess it: hauled ass.
Have Bed Bug Problems?
As it turns out, the 11 story apartment complex which has 11 apartments on each floor is well-known for the infestation of bed bugs and roaches. Even more astonishing than the fact that this 11 story complex is housing people and not demolished is that the tenants are quite comfortable. The ones I spoke to stated that they pay between $12 and $17 PER MONTH for rent, because they received housing assistance due to homelessness. I, myself am homeless currently, hence the reason I WAS going to sleep there, I simply cannot grasp how one can sleep in bugs under any circumstance whatsoever. I literally wouldn’t live there if they paid me.
I also understand addiction which is another common denominator in housing but how does anyone live this way? A park bench, the beach, the grass outside, IDK if it were below freezing, I couldn’t sleep being bitten and simply accept it. I observed several addicts in poverty who had given up on a quality life accusing each other of being the "Host" of this infestation, clearly suffering shame and embarrassment. Not enough to do anything about it however. Nothing less than mind-blowing and frankly traumatic.
My friend called the CDC and they claimed this is not a public health problem, I beg to differ after suffering both physical and mental trauma. I feel the owners of these apartments should be forced to re house all tenants, replace belongings to a reasonable degree and drop an atomic bomb on the building TWICE! Their must also be a desire within the community to live healthy which I did not witness at this building. It is sad. This is my one choice descriptive word:sad. Once I was no longer consumed by anxiety & sheer terror I thought of the innocent children who reside there and can’t fathom having grown up this way. This is unacceptable. The government should be involved, in my opinion. While I still feel as though something’s crawling on me a day later, and am still suffering severe itching and anxiety, although I know I’ll be okay I’m definitely, absolutely traumatized. Their simply aren’t words to describe this experience. No matter what I wrote, unless you experience it you’ll never know the he’ll these disgusting creatures are.
I had to visit the Emergency room last night because the symptoms weren’t going away, they prescribed an ointment to prevent infection and vistaril for itching. Such a nasty little bug. " – Melissa

These things are gross
Yes they are
I live at HUD senior housing in Milwaukee county. Our building has to be treated once a month and the bed bug dog comes through when new people move in. We have baster ext services. Once every 3 yrs they put powder in walls to control them. If you want to know the truth like Melissa says drop a bomb on building. HUD should have better screening of tenants moving in.
I know I have bites all over me. But I’m glad I have the spray whoo
I do not like bed bugs but my dogs eat them
that is gross
Thanks! This was incredibly helpful!!
when the bedbug bites a human it looks gross
every time i go to a hotel i come bitten all over and my dermatologist told me it was from picking because i was nervous. the heck with that . i called security because it felt like a spider bite and it was sweeling and it got bigger and redder and it must of got bit a few days before because it got all festered up and swollen and it started backing out. I sanitized it with some some alcohal and with tweezers this but started backing out and fulids came out and this big piece of it came out with my skin attached. the security guard saw it & then we found a hole in the other side of this matteress. we came back this time and i called up the my doctor and see her tomorrow. we are getting a motor home. I can feel them in my head right now and if i spry some alhocal on the sores the shells or bits and pieces will come out. who wants to go to bed.
Bed Buds are clear until they bite, once they come in contact with blood then they are noticeable, so unfortunately unless you’ve been bitten by one of THESE BLOOD SUCKING PARASITES, or someone else has, you’re not even going to know their there…..HEADS UP
How much for each picture that you use ?

Hi my name is Irene I have lots of different kind of Bites from bed bugs from head to toe and on Bob’s and butt and i don’t have a pix of a little bedbug and one big one there dead just killed them
I think i found a bed bug on a leg pullow in bed with my paralyzed daughter. I have torn bed apart and see no others? I noticed bites in a long line on her and took her to dermatologist. He did not mention bed bugs. My daughters sitter lives in public housing. Could it have fallen off her sitter? My daughter rarely leaves her room. I can send pics of bites and bug, no charge.
I was replacing a light bulb in a lamp on an end table and discovered a half a dozen of them on the shade and on the table. the interesting thing is this is our second home and other than me has not been occupied for four years by wife and out dogs. The location is an upstairs unused bedroom. The master bedroom where I sleep, I have never noticed anything, and I did a search after the finding. My questions: are how did they get into that room and why? Can they survive for 3 years with no food. they were all the 1/4″ adult variety. The Brown dog tick and the adult bed bug look alike to the untrained expert, like myself. The room is in partial shade even during daylight so not real bright in there. They were alive but not moving much unless provoked. I was at a loss what to do? Throwing away the lamp, night stand did cross my mind and so I decided to not take any chances and bag them up in the room and toss them, spray thoroughly and call an exterminator. Bed Bugs sound like a NIGHTMARE; I hope it is the brown dog tick or if bed bugs, I can get rid of them before it becomes a huge problem. Any thoughts?
I never personally had these ugly creepy crawlers..but we had them at work and I had to be super cautious..people spend all this money for nothing..I googled them and found that saturating your bed and all around with straight alcohol and putting bounce dryer sheets in pillow cases and under mattress and wheresber else you can find will keep them away.they can live six months without feeding..but if you saturate with alcohol it will help keep them away and it kills them instantly
Is it rubbing alcohol you use?
Yes the. Eat one to use is green but you can use both.
That’s supposed to say “the green one”
Thanks for that tip so that truly wirks cause I have a friend that lives in HUD housing for the seniors. She just found got that a person on her floor has bedbug. She already very sickly so she doesn’t needed to get bite. Am try your method.
LAVENDER AND TEA TREE OIL.. A LIL VODKA… IN A FREBREEZE BOTTLE.. WARM WATER.. IT WORKS.
They can actually live up to 15 months with no food. Alcohol will only work if it is wet. So if it dries and they walk through it, it will not kill them. Isolate your bed with interceptors at the leg bases, encase your pillows and box spring with a mattress ENCASEMENT NOT PROTECTOR. The ENCASEMENT should be bed bug proof. Wipe down your frame with alcohol and vacuum good to ensure there are no eggs (the size of a pin head and yellowish white). VERY IMPORTANT pull you bed away from the wall and make sure nothing is touching it and your comforter doesn’t reach the floor. This will protect you from getting bitten AND you will catch the bed bugs is the receptors at night (usually around 3-5 am – however, they will come out in the day if they are hungry). They will feed on an animal but they prefer humans and don’t like pet hair but remember they can survive 15 months without food, but the good news is they will not be able to lay eggs unless they eat. This will help you not get bitten and to determine how bad your problem is…if you catch them in the interceptors flush them down the toilet in order to kill them. You will then need to debug your house. They like crevices, moldings, electrical outlets…anywhere they can hide in a cool dark place. Diatomaceous Earth can be used around moldings and outlets as this will kill them after 10 days of them walking through the powder. Wipe down all moldings, under drawers, and places you think they may like with alcohol. They also like to hide in the couch. You can steam the couch and any crevices …it will need to be at least 120 degrees F. As this is the only temperature that will kill them within minutes with the steamer. Also, all clothes should be placed in the dryer on high and at least 120 degrees f for 20-30 minutes to kill any eggs or nymphs. It is a lot of work I know…but worth getting rid of them…you don’t want to get infested. They are awful creatures! And if not attended to you can be infested within months and possibly get 500 bites a night ! Well, I hope this helped you a little…start with the bed so they can’t bite you and go from there. It’s a lot cheaper than an exterminator…but if you become infested you may have to get one. Good luck ….sleep tight and don’t let the bed bugs bite! God Bless.
I right clicked on a photo but I can’t copy the html code what’s up?
Sorry about that. There was a jQuery conflict issue with the embedding feature which has since been resolved.

Please let me know what I gotta do. I don’t care what it is as long as it’s not crazy expensive due to our budget. Anyhow, we’ve assumed my 1 year old was having allergic reactions to things for past few months & have tested many theories bcuz we weren’t getting bit & we’re in the same room. Well tonight I felt something crawl on me & freaked when I saw it. After immediately looking online at pictures, we are CERTAIN they’re bed bugs. My poor baby is all I keep thinking. Please please help!!!!

Please share your solution to bed bugs.
My fiance and I stayed in a motel for a week and contracted bed bugs there. We moved to another motel (we are homeless) and realized after a few days that they had hitched a ride with us. We are now back at our campsite where we have lived for about 14 months and are still getting bit, even though we live in a tent! I just smashed the largest one I’ve seen yet to date. I pulled up our padding (the pillowtop of a mistress we sleep on) and there it was, just hanging out. I am so fed up! They’re nearly impossible to get rid of.
They are kinda hard to get rid of .We had them in Lubbock and finally got our air fixed so we kept it really cold that killed them and they are not just nocturnal creatures lol they came out at daytime too.We haven’t seen any since leaving Lubbock
Never gonna get rid of them almost impossible
Your clothes are washed in hot water and heated in dryer had been most effective way. Cloth furniture can be froze treated. When doing clothes, keep separate until place has been sterilized. Most mattress and box springs are not salvaged; they are replaced.
A family member had a problem and we gir rid of them. Bought encasenent for her matresses but before sealing them we put diatamacease earth powder inside. it eats away and drys out their shell casing. then we sprayed all basebosrds, cabinets and bombed every roon in her duplex, and immediatly after it dried the same day, we put the diatemacease earth powder along all baseboards and around /insideall electrical outlets and light switches throughout. We repeated this pricess twice and made sure to keep the diatamacease earth powder around. She no longer has them and did not throw out her furniture. you’ve got to be vigilent and must declutter. the sofa was turned upside down, sprayed and the powder was placed inside upside down. the powder was also placed around the frame of the beds and where the legs of the bed met the floor with stickie traps. And placed under and behind furniture. It’s a lot of work but cheaper than hiring a company. the spray we used was the big container if black flag home insect control for all crawling bugs. you have to bag and heat all clothing and bedding , and you must use bith thr liquid spray and yhe powder and repeat two to three times within a week and a half of each treatment. that allows you to kill what is active and what eventually hatches.
Ann what are the products you used? Thanks
Please explain how to get rid of them. I am finding one after I been outside with my dog.
Isn’t it so satisfying to pop them after they had a full meal?…just put pressure on their plump little abdomen with the flat of your fingernail and pop! Goes the bedbug! ~
If they dont give up you can also watch them try to waddle away as their guts slowly leak out. It’s just pure catharsis.
Brian can you please attend me your method KILLIN bed bugs with alcohol immediately please
Hi brian I just moved into an apartment that I discovered was infested with bedbugs. We called an exterminator but I am still being bitten I just want to move how do I make sure that I don’t bring them with me? Thank you!!
Hi…I, too had my struggles with the bastards..nightmare is an understatement. I live in ct and we have one of the biggest problems with them in the country for God’s sake…well, my suggestion is this; anything that can be washed. Wash it. And dry it at hottest setting. People think the hot water kills em. Not true. The heat from dryer is the way to go. Next, varnish anything and everything that can be varnished. Bed frames, bureaus tables, floors trim etc. Reason being the burrow in wood.for up to 3 yrs, by varnishing, seals the bastards in there and they eventually die…throw away anything that is of not sentimental value to u. Again, they can remain dormant for up to 3 yrs. They also burrow in electronics and what not…ik, ugghhh…that’s a judgement call on ur part..U could always wrap items in plastic, good. Tight like. Then rent a storage unit, put all that shit in there fo r few yrs…Ik it’s a nightmare. They have reputable exterminaters that actually offer financing…from what I hear they do a fantastic job…but u have to follow the protocol to the T. NO JOKE.do some checkong, ask around see who is good in ur area and take it from there….good luck. My name is shannon…if u eve wanna talk, feel free to call me..2032409787…:)
Brain please tell me how you got rid of your bed bugs please

I just found a bed bug this morning,I saw it crawling on my pillow from the corner of my eye and then disappeared. I pulled the covers and did not give up until finding it. It was tiny and very red so I assume it had just fed….eewww,it mustve fed on me since I was the only one in the bed!!GROSS!!! Luckily (for me) Im staying at a friends right now so it isnt my home but how do I make sure I dont bring those little critters with me??? PLEASE HELP ASAP,as I’ll be going back to my house in the next couple days! Someone, please send me an email @ firstname.lastname@example.org and help me with some advice so I don’t let them hitch a ride home with me!! Thank You!!
I’ve fought a year-long battle with these blood-sucking sons-of-bitches.
After supposedly defeating them I found a couple buggers on my kitchen counter–but they’re not typical of the reddish-copper variety, so I’m here to identify them one way or another.
These things are a quarter of an inch long but with a black shell, and are more elongated rather than the squat, oval form. Yet I understand that they Might fit the profile of one stage in their development. What makes me doubt that they’re bed bugs is that the shell lacks the unique horizontal lines. I’m hoping this is some kind of beetle like a carpet or spider beetle.
Because if it isn’t I feel like torching my kitchen!
I’m pretty confident your talking about a cockroach
Hahaha ur silly but cockroaches are a hole nother story
Cockroaches maybe buddy
Sounds like a cockroach man good luck there pretty tough to get rid of too
Had a new neighbor move in next door.I was being nice and invited him in for a glass of water. Oh My heavens gross disgusting he came and apparently left bed bugs on my 2 day old couch. what the hell am I supposed to do now.
Get rid of the couch assp
No wait i have a way you can say bye for good and it worked for me and others i have told about it.
I have a shark hand held steamer i used it on a couch and a bed and other furniture and killed them all. I steamed every day for a week the whole bed and couch, i mean everything from the pillows to the underside and in the cracks.
It really did kill them and they never came back. If i sold steam vleaners i would be rich because this little thing has been the best thing i ever bought!!
If anyone wants more details on how i did it and what kind of steamer to get. Please dpnt hesitate to email me … I would love to help you get rid of those horrible things. Pj@Hollywoodsvoices.com
I just recently found I have bed bugs and have been spraying and have bombed a few times and still have them but not as bad . What kind of shark steamer do you have and what else have you tried just curious . Thank you for t time . Becky
Went to my grandmother’s house to mow her lawn, because she’s on dialysis and getting older in age. Anyway, when I get inside and after sitting on her couch for approximately 25 minutes she decides to warn me about her having bedbugs and how she scheduled appointment for exterminator. Mind you if I had known I wouldn’t of even went to cut her lawn lol. After leaving her house I decide to walk home instead of use my car just incase I get home after taking a detour and walking an extra 4 miles just to be sure I got rid of these tiny creepy crawling blood thirsty vampires . Before I go in my front door I opt to go through the back of my home through garage I immediately throw all clothes inside a plastic bag and throw on clothes I had inside my dryer I go back outside with the bag and toss the bag in the trash. 50$ pair of jeans and 20$ T shirt small price to pay with dealing with chance of spreading these bastards I go inside and pass out and take a nap when I awake my jaw drops I had realized I left my shoes off after mowing her lawn because I didn’t want to get grass stains or mud on my grandmother’s lawn I immediately bag my sneakers and throw them in the dryer for 45 min on high heat then left the sneakers outside a week went by and I noticed a few round red bites slightly itchy I couldn’t tell if they were mosquitoes and me being parenoid I shrug it off 10 days after I flip my light on at 2 a.m to grab a water out of my fridge get back to my room and out of curiosity decided to throw my light on to look around ( I had found a giant house centapede a few days ago the largest I ever saw lol and those things creep me out ) on my wall I saw what looked like a tiny carpet beetle I grabbed a paper towel from my desk and went to mush it yet when I looked the said but was alive and well and not crushed I had a plastic zip lock bag laying out and I immediately threw it in the bag and observed this vile creature it had a long straw sucker type mouth but it did not have the classic shape of bed bugs that are flat and round this was more narrow almost like a tick it had a solid dark brown color with a few flecks of black and a few tiny tiny tiny flecks of white on on one spot I filled the zip lock with a little rubbing alcohol to presserve the specimen incase I need it identified . I’m not exactly sure if it’s a bedbug even after studying up on them the thing that makes me second guess is the dif larva stages and stages between molts as well as what they look like before and after a feeding and the dif between male and female this looked like a female / newly fed possibly early life cycle kind of like what the. I read above me found in his kitchen I believe that thought it might be a tick
Does alcohol kill bedbugs? ???
I just found what appears to be a bed bug after i have been getting bitten by something for weeks could someone please tell me how to get rid of them. Does alcohol really kill them? If not what does?
Hi Shannon ….Yes it does on contact… spary the bugs … Just understand when wet it ls Flammable you can get 70°/. Not 91 °/ 70 once dry no long flammableRubbing alcohol does evaporate Just be careful but it works I’m doing it You can also spray your pajamas before you go to sleep and wipe it on your skin and they won’t bite you The key is not to feed them you stopping life cycle stages By not feeding them
HEAT. first put everything into plastic garbage style bags and put outside in the sun for a few days. Heat will kill them, this is what the exterminater did. take all animals and people out of the house and turn your heater on as high as you can. Wash all clothing and bedding and dry on HIGH to be safe then clean house thoroughly tada u just saved $800 dollars or more. If I would have known that I would have done it myself. Any questions pls email me at email@example.com
From what I understand the heat in the house must get to 135F. I don’t know of a home furnace that can go that high. I cannot find evidence of the little buggers anywhere in my home. (thank God) doesn’t mean they are not here. I understand that it can take more than a week for the allergic reaction to appear on humans and then not necessarily on everyone. My culprit unfortunately I think was on public transportation. ( a ride I shouldn’t have needed to take but someone screwed up big time and it wasn’t me!)
Awesome I never heard of that cool I’ll have to do that next time but I found that just washung and drying has killed them also just as well. I don’t see why you’d have to use that stuff. ??? Please explain why they would use that flamible oil ???
It will not kill them but they won’t bite long as alcohol isn’t dry.
does rubbing alcohol kill them?
This is for Anybody dealing with bed bugs….. Get Lestoil is an old fashioned heavy duty cleaner wash your clothes with it It kill the eggs Clean your carpets with it..clean the house… open a window while cleaning… it has Vapors that actually Can Build up helps with.. the bug problem down but they’re also flammable they have to be careful used but people use to use this in the back in the old days
You should also check the ceiling, too. I’ve heard a true story once where a ceiling collapsed on someone because of the weight of all the bed bugs hiding inside it.
Also check the bed sheets in any hotel room. They never wash the sheets, and almost always are infested with roaches or bed bugs. In some cases, infested with centipedes.
THANK YOU! We’re a new taskforce. Huge problem in Northeast Ohio.
My 10 year old son & I were recently stricken very ill. Normally, we drive a good 45 minutes to see our regular Dr. However since we were extremely sick we chose to drive only 5 minutes to the nearest location. We Only go there in emergency situations for other reasons but while we were there, placed in the same room, I saw “It”, crawling in & out of a crack in the wall..then climbing very short distances up the wall & then even ventured out onto the floor. I pointed it out to my most curious 10 yr old who within 5 min had it identified as an “Unfed Adult Bed Bug”. I had already suspected it Was a bedbug but after snapping the pics & even a short Video, I was Certain. We had to point this out not once or twice, but Three times before anyone would take us seriously. And only after my son sticking his phone with the pics in her face did the Nurse finally pick up a paper towel & simply tossed it into the Trash Can! I can only imagine what lies behind that wall!! Yes, i kept original pics & video!
The only way to get rid of bed bugs permanently is call an exterminator.
Please tell me how to get rid of bed bugs and if you have a procedure to get rid of roaches too. TIA firstname.lastname@example.org
It took Four treatments to kill all of them from Terminex from the house i was renting. We moved into the home and by the time we found out the home had bedbugs all of our furniture was infested. We had to wrap them in plastic and dispose of them. I was furious. Word of advice..study the signs of bedbugs and check homes before renting!!
Can i use the images and pictures from this site for my own site. Please advice. Thanks Francois

To get rid of these pests you have to be thorough Strip everything from the bed and launder them. Take everything out of your closets and launder what can be washed and dry clean what can’t be washed. Wash curtains. Vacuum every nook and craney. And get a product called Stop Bugging Me. It is sold on Amazon. Used to be sold on HSN but they stopped selling it there for some reason. But it works. Spray every crack and crevice. It’s all natural and non toxic to children and pets.
Spray around and under the bed and in between the mattress and box springs. Buy the mattress covers made for preventing bed bugs and mites and careful not to tear the covers while putting them on. They have covers for the pillows also. It’s important to spray everywhere. Around any opening anywhere in your home. Especially if you have a severe infestation. They are very hard to get rid of and you may have to repeat in a few months. And don’t forget to clean out your vacuum you could be vacuuming up the eggs to these critters and they could hatch. I use this as a precaution because I live in a retirement building and people here are getting them all the time. They run rampant . I use it everywhere and have not so much as seen a spider. It’s safe. Pleasant scent

I went to change my son’s pillow case and found a bug on the plastic cover that is over his pillow. I killed it not thinking anything other then it’s a bug. I found the same bug this morning on top of his bed. This is the third time I’ve seen this type of bug. It does not seem to be biting my son though.
